KARACHI: Date for degree classes’ registration extended

KARACHI, Dec 9: The University of Karachi has announced its decision to extend the last date for submission of registration forms and deposition of fees for BA, BCom, BSc, and improvement of division examinations, with a late fee, up to Dec 11. All the formalities and procedures in this regard will remain the same as announced earlier.

ALLOWANCE: The University of Karachi has approved a ‘knowledge update allowance’ for its faculty members, vice-chancellor Dr Zafar Saied Saify said at an ‘Eid Milan’ programme, which was largely attended by teaching and non- teaching staff on Monday, a university spokesman said.

Dr Saify pointed out that the allowance would be utilized under the heads of reference books, internet and research facilities. He praised the research activities being undertaken at the university.

The vice-chancellor referred to the setting up of research institutes at the university and said that some of them were of international standard.

He said the buildings of some of the institutes had been completed and their labs were in the final stage of completion.

Dr Saify stated that the A.Q. Khan Institute of Genetic Engineering and the Syedna Burhanuddin Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine would be inaugurated in March.

He told the gathering that the higher education commission had introduced a scheme of projects in the universities which were beneficial for the country. A financial assistance of up to Rs2 million, he added, would be extended for such projects.

Dr Saify pointed out that the foundation stone of the building of the Institute of Sugar Technology and Textile Institute would soon be laid, besides establishment of an Institute of Meteorology.

The Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences is being accorded the status of centre of excellence, he added.

He said the project of the Institute of Community Medicine would also be taken up which would be affiliated with the John Hopkins University.

He said a Rs200 million grant had already been received for the Green Research Institute.

Prof Dr Riazul Islam and KU registrar Dr Mohammad Abdul Rauf also spoke.—PPI/APP
