LAHORE, Dec 8: Bay horse Great Grandy sprang a surprise victory in the feature event of the 10th Lahore Winter Meeting run over a mile at the Racecourse Sunday.
Races resumed in Lahore after a month-long break due to Ramazan, with a seven- event card.
Four to one chance Great Grandy scored a two-and-a-half lengths win over chestnut colt Red Ransom, who failed to justify his 20 to 100 favouritism under jockey Aamar Parvez. Blu’s Wendy finished third, seven-and-a-half lengths further back with Bureaucrat in fourth position among six runners. Jockey Shahid Rehman rode the winner. This was the seventh and last race of the day.
Earlier, bay filly Democracy was given a patient ride by jockey Salah-ud-Din II to hit the front in the dying strides and win the sixth and supporting event run over a mile.
Democracy beat Red Storm by one-and-a-half lengths with Lucky Shot, one-and-three quarters of a length further back in the third place. Millennium Count failed to pick up in the final stretch and fell back to fourth position, three and three quarters of a-length further behind. Only eight competed for the event.
Jockey Salah-ud-Din II earned the afternoon’s riding honours by bringing home three winners. He began his day with a fluent victory on My Own Business in the third race and followed it with an easy success on Dizzy Heights in the fifth event. He completed his treble with a well deserved victory on Democracy in the sixth and supporting event.
Jockey Shahid Rehman celebrated his return to saddle with a grand double through Naseeb in the two-year-old thoroughbreds race and Great Grandy in the feature event.
