Hoor-e-Mehran runs away with Eid Milan Cup

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Dec 8: Syed Sadruddin Shah’s three-year- old dark bay filly Hoor-e-Mehran ran away with the Eid Milan Cup at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting held on Sunday at the Karachi Race Course.

Partnered by Ghulam Shabbir II, the filly jumped out second behind The New Champion and held on to the lead approaching the bend. Turning for home, The New Champion went a trifle wide which enabled Hoor-e-Mehran to take over the lead.

The New Champion however, recovered quickly and was in quick pursuit as the two sprinted for home, closely followed by Show Time and Guarantee. With her rider urging her on, Hoor-e-Mehran passed the winning post, clocking one minute 18 3/5 going over the six furlongs. Show Time with a tremendous burst from the outside, finished second two lengths behind, edging out The New Champion, while Guarantee completed the frame.

Hoor-e-Mehran is trained by Allah Judrio, who finished the afternoon’s programme with a splendid double, when he sent out Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro VII’s five-year-old bay mare Fire Of Desire to a smashing victory in the concluding race, beating Donatello by half a length after both runners were engaged in a keen tussle in the home stretch while sprinting for home. Shining Steel on song for his fifth straight win, let plenty of the racing fans down, finishing a disappointing fourth behind Saligna.

The victory of Fire Of Desire, also enabled jockey Ghulam Shabbir II, share in the victory celebrations, crowing himself with a double also.

In the opener, Lucky Love, partnered by Tariq Mahmood, beat Rolling Thunder by one and half lengths, after jockey M. Nisar replaced Shahzad in the saddle at the starting gate.

Three greys were engaged in a lively duel in the next event, in which High Speed ridden by Ali Murad beat Sarafan and Sachin, even after Sarafan managed to draw abreast of the winner 300 yards from the winning post.

Jockey M. Nisar, moved a little closer to lifting the jockeys championship title, riding Sajan Black to a fluent victory in the third race of the afternoon. Prism Of Life hanging on to the railing, sprinted in from behind beating Just In Fun for the second spot.

Love Land, and eight-year-old bay gelding, with jockey Dilshad in the saddle, won the following event with plenty to spare, beating Power Plus by a handsome margin of 10 lenghts.

The next event was “actually” won by Golden Voice having the services of jockey Arshad. The bay gelding seemed to be heading for an easy victory, but the crowd fancy Micky Mikado II with Shahzad aboard, came in with a rattling burst and just 100 yards away from the winning post both runners collided which nearly sent Micky Mikado II and his rider crashing down to earth.

However, with Shahzad managing to control his mount, Micky Mikado II finished second, 3/4 lengths behind Golden Voice. Immediately after the race, Shahzad lodged a protest with the Stewards that he was bumped by Golden Voice which prevented him from winning the race. The Stewards upheld the protest and Micky Mikado II was declared the winner, with Golden Voice bracketed into the second spot. In second event, High Speed fancied in our columns won the race from our second best Sarafan.
