Two Eids in N. America

By Abdul Sattar Ghazali

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 8: A large number of Muslims living in North America celebrated Eidul Fitr on Thursday following the example of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen and Jordan.

However, there were also those who chose to celebrate Eid on Friday Dec 6 according to the decision given by the National Shura Council of North America.

The Shura Council had announced that it was clear from the astronomical data that it would be impossible to sight the new moon anywhere in North America on Wednesday, Dec 4, 2002, the 029th day of Ramazan, therefore, it was almost certain that Eidul Fitr would fall on Friday, Dec 6.

However, many Islamic Centres in California and elsewhere ignored the Shura Council’s decision and held Eid prayers on Thursday Dec 5.
