American Muslims celebrate Eid

Published December 6, 2002

NEW YORK, Dec 5: The majority of Muslims living in North America celebrated Eidul Fitr on Thursday marking the end of Ramazan, as the East coast was hit by a snowstorm making it a first “White Eid” in decades for the Muslims living here.

The United Nations remained closed to observe the holiday, as were most Muslim nations missions, embassies and Muslim institutions

Muslims living in the North East braved snowstorm to attend Eid prayers as the heavy snow forced school closings in most States, including New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania etc. The meteorological department was predicting eight inches of snow in the region, more than all the snow last year.

At most congregations the Muslims prayed for peace in the Middle-East, particularly for the people in Palestine and Kashmir.

US President Bush sent a video taped Eid message to the Muslims living in the United States and the world over.

Bush in his message noted that “the spirit behind this holiday reminds us that Islam brings hope and comfort to millions of people in my country.”—PPI
