LONDON: Manchester United avoided a potential banana skin against Burnley but Sunderland suffered English League Cup embarrassment at the hands of first division Sheffield United on Tuesday. Goals in each half by strikers Diego Forlan and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave Manchester United a comfortable 2-0 win in their fourth-round tie at first division Burnley and a place in the quarterfinals. Sunderland, third from bottom in the Premier League, were sunk 2-0 at Bramall Lane, with Shaun Murphy and Wayne Allison scoring Sheffield United’s goals. With 33 points from 18 games, Nice are two points ahead of reigning champions Olympique Lyon, who travel to struggling Paris St Germain Wednesday. They opened the scoring with a lucky goal as Brazilian defender Everson’s 25-metre free kick took a deflection and went in off a post. Ten minutes later striker Kaba Diawara swivelled round two defenders on the left and set up Serge Ayeli, who slipped the ball inside the right post to make it 2-0. Diawara scored the third five minutes from time with a well-struck shot from a Laurent Gagnier cross.—Reuters
