Davis Cuppers receive cash awards

ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: The Davis Cup boys who helped Pakistan earn promotion to Asia Oceania Grade I by defeating China last September have reaped the rewards for their efforts with ace Aisamul Haq picking up incentive payment and win bonus worth $5000.

Pakistan Tennis Federation officials said Wednesday that Aqeel Khan, who played a star role had become richer by Rs 100,000. Asim Shafik and Nomi Qamar were awarded Rs 25,000 while captain Rashid Malik was given Rs 30,000.

President Gen Pervez Musharraf also announced separate cash prizes. Aisam and Aqeel collected Rs 100,000 each with Asim and Nomi Qamar being given Rs 50,000 each.

The PTF also gave away daily allowances to the players amounting to Rs 175,000.

Meanwhile, the PTF has asked 10 players to attend the training camp in preparation for the Feb 7 to 9 Davis Cup tie against New Zealand.

The first phase of the camp will take place between Dec 25 and Jan 3 in Islamabad after which it will be moved to Lahore for the second stage that will run from Jan 9 to Feb 5.

Mahboob Khan has been appointed the coach for the first phase while Muhammad Khalid will coach in Lahore. Iftikhar Ahmed named the camp commandant.

The players invited to the camp are:

Aisamul Haq, Aqeel Khan, Asim Shafik, Nomi Qamar, Shahzad Samad Khan, Muhammad Shafiq, Shahzad Khan, Wasif Cheema, Inam Gul and Rameez Junaid.

The PTF on Wednesday also announced a three-member under-14 team which will take part in the ITF South Asian Championships from Jan 26 to Feb 6 in Sri Lanka.

Omer Babar, Yasir Khan and Khurram Nazir were selected following three days of trials that took place at the PTF Complex in which 12 players participated.
