Security plan for Eid days

LAHORE, Dec 4: Tight security measures have been taken in the city and elsewhere in the Punjab to maintain peace on Eid days.

Meetings attended by the Punjab administration, senior police hierarchy and representatives from district governments on Wednesday finalized a security plan for Eid days.

Following a similar meeting at the Civil Secretariat, all police heads in the province were asked to be vigilant and told that they would be held responsible in case of any law and order problem.

“The number of personnel of different forces deployed for security on Eid days are in thousands,” Lahore DPO Javed Noor said, adding they had been performing their duties since the 27th of Ramazan. Though there was no threat or any report from the intelligence agencies, “we have taken elaborate security measures for churches and other places of worship of minorities, he said.

Mr.Noor said all roads leading to eidgahs would be manned by police patrol. He said they would also keep an eye on recreational places.

Meanwhile, security personnel have been detailed at all busy markets, shopping centres and places holding funfairs before Eid.

“We shopped literally under guns,” said a shopper, Salman Hameed, in Anarkali on Wednesday.

In addition to formal deployment, plainclothesmen have also been deployed at markers to keep an eye on subversive elements. Cinemas and theatres expected to fetch a large number of people on Eid days have also been provided security.

Besides markets, personnel from police, elite force and intelligence agencies are said to have been deployed at bus stands and railway stations. Pickets have also been set up at all entry and exit points of the city. For smooth traffic, traffic police will discharge their duties on Thursday.
