SAHIWAL, Dec 3: Two hundred and ninety-five prisoners involved in minor crimes were released from the Sahiwal Central Jail on Tuesday.

They were released on the recommendation of review committees headed by district and sessions judges of Sahiwal, Okara and Pakpattan districts.

Eight prisoners who were to pay Rs85,600 fine collectively were also released when an industrialist paid their fine.

TERMINATION: Service of 49 meter readers and inspectors were terminated in Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan on corruption charges and wrong billing.

This was stated by a senior Mepco official on Tuesday.

He said Mepco refunded Rs150 million to consumers who were sent wrong bills. He said 5,106 power theft cases were detected and the alleged thieves were fined Rs28 million of which Wapda had realized Rs5.341 million.

He said ban on new tubewell connections had been lifted. Mepco had a target of 900 tubewell connections of which 627 app-lications were being processed.
