MIRPURKHAS: Growers protest against water shortage

By Our Correspondent

MIRPURKHAS, Dec 3: A large number of growers held demonstrations at various places on Monday to protest against the acute shortage and unjust distribution of irrigation water.

The growers of the Bugghi minor, Jamrao canal, were led by Syed Bachal Shah, Ghulam Qadir Khoso, and Javed Kaim Khani in Digri Taluka. They demanded the immediate supply of water in the Bugghi minor.

The protesters told newsmen that water had been supplied for only six days in the Bugghi minor after a closure of 15 days as a result of which wheat cultivation had been affected and the growers would suffer losses amounting to lacs of rupees.

The growers held a demonstration at Jhuddo town in protest against the closure of the water supply in the Jamrao canal.

The protest was held under the banner of the Shehri Ittehad and the Citizens Welfare Association.

Speaking to the protesters, Khalid Pervez Sadaf, member, District Council Mirpurkhas, said that due to the closure of the water supply in the Jamrao canal, the people were facing an acute shortage of water in Jhuddo town.

The growers held protest demonstrations in Mirwah Gorchani town, which were led by Sardar Alam Rajput, Meraj Khalid, and Dost Ali Gorchani.

The protesters alleged that the influential landlords tampered with the watercourses in connivance with the irrigation officials, while the small growers and other people were deprived even of drinking water.
