KARACHI, Dec 1: The city government has yet to take a decision on several projects lying abandoned in former district South. The defunct KMC had launched these projects in 1996.

In June this year the Lyari Town administration drew the attention of the city Nazim to these abandoned projects and called for early execution of work on them in public interest.

So far the city government has not paid any heed to the proposal of the Town Nazim, thereby depriving the people of the benefits of these projects.

These projects were taken up by the defunct KMC, in 1996, to provide better civic facilities to the people and to improve the general living conditions in the area.

But work on these projects were stopped abruptly for reasons best known to the authorities. The projects include two shopping centres: one at Chawkiwara and the other on Shah Waliullah Road in Khadda; a football stadium of international standard, and a mono-technical institute near Lyari General Hospital.

The football stadium is situated in front of Lyari General Hospital and a major part of development work is still remains to be carried out.

Sport-loving people of the area are being deprived of this project, which was earlier initiated several years ago with the promise of fulfilling an old public demand for the encouragement of sport activities in the area.

KHADDA MARKET: This is one of the oldest development schemes in Lyari Town which was begun after the demolition of the KMC’s old market shops several years ago.

Since then, after clearance of structures, this huge space has been lying open without being utilized for the purpose of a supermarket. Now it is being used as a garbage dumping ground.

The project is of much importance because of a lack of market facilities in the area. At present Lea Market is the only market for shopping purpose.

CHAWKIWARA MARKET: This is yet another project that was initiated by the defunct KMC. It has been lying abandoned since long.

In 1996, the defunct KMC had built a supermarket near Bizenjo Chowk in Chawkiwara. The project development work was stopped some years ago. This important project has been lying abandoned since. Encroachers have gradually been occupying the project land.

The residents have demanded of the government to clear the impediments in the way of execution of these projects and complete them at the earliest. They also opposed the alleged move to auction of public property, saying any move to sell the plots of these projects would be resisted.
