ISLAMABAD, Nov 28: The information technology minister, Awais Ahmad Leghari, on Thursday, asked Ufone to expand its network to more towns and cities, particularly focusing on the rural areas.
He expressed these views at a briefing by Ufone at its office. The IT and Telecom secretary, Ashfaq Mehmood, was also present on the occasion.
The minister said among the rural areas, priority should be given to those areas from where a large number of people had gone abroad for work to help them communicate with their families.
He said an important factor behind the progress made by Ufone was the independence and autonomy in decision-making it was given by the ministry.
The minister appreciated the ministry for contributing to the progress made by Ufone. He said the ministry would continue its policy of non-interference and all decisions were to be made with a professional approach.
He expressed hopes that Ufone would continue working in a professional way and all contracts would be awarded in a transparent manner, following the laid down laws and procedures.
Earlier, the minister was given a presentation by Arshad Khan, chief executive officer, Ufone, about the history of cellular industry, tariff strategy, and new services launched by Ufone etc.
He was also informed that Ufone managed not only to capture 24 per cent market share, but also introduced a number of innovative services such as WAP (mobile internet), internet payment facility, Global SMS, wireless vending machine, SMS live chat etc.
Mr Khan explained the procedural problems in network expansion. The minister appreciated that Ufone had earned remarkable profits and was pioneer in introducing many services. — APP
