KHAIRPUR, Nov 28: The District Council Khairpur on Thursday discussed the distribution of the funds, announced by the Sindh governor, among the union councils of the district.
The governor during his visit to Khairpur last September had announced special development schemes for three Talukas — Nara, Faiz Ganj, and Sobhodero.
The EDO, revenue, told the session that the sanctioned funds were supposed to be spent in three Talukas exclusively and there were legal as well as administrative difficulties in distributing these funds to the other Talukas.
Serai Nisar, a member of the council presented a working paper, suggesting to levy development tax on banana and date production.
He recommended that the district government should levy Rs500 per truck and Rs100 per pickup loaded with banana and Rs5 to Rs10 per cartoon or bag of dates.
The move was strongly opposed by four members of government benches, including Qurban Shah, Dr Ahmed Ali Kubar, and Imtiaz Mallah.
The district Nazim, Nafisa Shah, condemned the ruling and termed it a hasty one.
The session passed the recommendations presented by the union council Nazim, Ghulam Haider Mehar, that some 35 union councils did not have their own offices and they should be provided with their own office buildings.
The meeting advised such union councils to move the Sindh government and district government in writing to pay their rent expenses.
Earlier, at the outset of the meeting, the opposition members complained that the meeting was illegal as the district Nazim had no power to call a requisition meeting but even then a meeting had been called.
They alleged that the previous meeting was also illegal and the minutes of that meeting had not been approved.
On the occasion, the members of government and opposition groups exchanged hot words.
The opposition members created difficulties in the proceedings of the session. Later, they boycotted the session and staged a walkout.
