KARACHI, Nov 28: About 30,000 calves are slaughtered every month in the city’s Cattle Colony, and the provincial livestock department has prepared a plan to stop this indiscriminate slaughter of animals.
Under the plan, farmers of Thatta, Badin and Hyderabad would be given 10-15 calves for breeding with the aim of increasing milk and meat production, said Sindh Secretary for Food and Livestock Imtiaz Kazi while presiding over a meeting here on Thursday.
The meeting reviewed steps to check indiscriminate and illegal slaughter of calves in Cattle Colony, Landhi.
The secretary said the government had taken notice of it and necessary enactment was under way to stop the practice.
He said the livestock department had chalked out a plan under which calves would be bought from dairy farmers and these would be given to farmers for breeding. Later, these would be sold after 1-2 years and the price of calf would be detected from sale proceed.
The secretary said a separate revolving fund was being created for purchase of calves.
The DG livestock told the meeting that 400,000-500,000 buffaloes were in Landhi and adjoining areas.
He said about 30,000 calves were born every month out of which only 10 per cent were brought up and the rest slaughtered.— APP
