KARACHI: Dialysis facility at Korangi hospital soon
KARACHI, Nov 28: The provincial health secretary has issued directives for the early completion of the under-construction dialysis unit at the Sindh Government Hospital, Korangi, so as to enable people to benefit from this essential facility.
The secretary, Ameer Ali Barq, was presiding over a meeting here on Thursday, according to an official statement.
The Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Nizamuddin Memon, briefed the meeting about the hospital’s functioning and said that the number of its beneficiaries was more or less four million.
He, however, pointed out that due to the absence of kidney cure facility at the hospital, a large number of people in Korangi and many other adjoining areas had to refer to the Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre or Civil Hospital for treatment. He stressed the need for the availability of dialysis and other kidney related treatment facility at the Korangi hospital which appeared to be a longstanding demand of the people.
The MS told the meeting that he had appealed to philanthropists for financial help and many of them responded positively. In this regard, he said, they had pledged assistance in providing four dialysis machines which were being imported from Britain.
Dr Nizam said that the machines would be installed as soon as the dialysis unit at the hospital completed.
Giving details of the estimated cost, he said that an amount of Rs70,000 was being spend on the construction of the unit while the cost of equipment was Rs3.4 million to be acquired under the Khushal Pakistan Programme. He said that the City District Government had already accorded approval for the project.
According to him, 80 per cent of work on the dialysis unit was completed by now.
The health secretary told the meeting that the Governor Mohammedmian Soomro had directed the department to put in efforts for the availability of quality treatment to the poor patients.
He cited the example of Civil Hospital Karachi in this regard and asked the officials to follow the same pattern. He said that efforts should be made to undertake projects under public-private partnership for further improvement in the facilities at the Korangi hospital. —APP
