Opposition to help flourish democracy

ISLAMABAD, Nov 22: The opposition will play a positive and healthy role to strengthen democracy in the country, said Liaquat Baloch and Shah Mehmood Qureshi, central leaders of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal and People’s Party Parliamentarians, respectively on Friday.

Speaking in a PTV programme, Liaquat Baloch said all the members sitting on opposition benches would not try to paralyse the democratic process.

He said in the opposition they would avoid unnecessary criticism and work for sovereignty and progress of the country.

To a question, he said being the parliamentary leader of the second largest party in the House, Qazi Hussain Ahmed may become the leader of the opposition.

Although MMA and PPP had unanimous point of view on certain issues they could not reach an agreement to form a government at the Centre, he said.

The MMA leader said that Pakistan had all the resources and potential for rapid development but regretted that they were not properly utilized in the past.

It was imperative, he said, to develop trust and self-respect among the masses so that they could face the future challenges.

He said his party would give full support to the government in its efforts for national development and a better Pakistan.

He expressed the hope that the government would respect the opposition and show patience to listen its view point.

Responding to a question about Faisal Saleh Hayat and his associates, the MMA leader said they were morally and legally bound to respect the mandate of their people.—APP
