NGOs asked to work for welfare of children

By Our Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Nov 20: Ms Sehba Musharraf has urged the civil society organizations to redefine their role benefiting children in the fields of education and health.

Speaking at a function, jointly organized by the Unicef and the ministry of women development in connection with International Children’s Day here on Wednesday, she also called upon all other stakeholders to join hands with the government in its efforts to improve the lot of children.

Referring to the special session of the general assembly for children held in May 2002, Ms Sehba said, the children had rightly called upon the world leaders to jointly work for a world fit for children.

She said though the government was fully alive to its responsibilities for improving the lives of children, the task of child development required well-coordinated efforts on the part of local philanthropists and international development partners, corporate sector, media and children themselves.

The country representative of Unicef, Ms Carroll Long, remarked that to make children’s needs known, national governments have to work in collaboration with each other.
