Power supply to 300 houses disconnected

By Our Correspondent

SUKKUR, Nov 18: The Irrigation Department employees held a protest demonstration in front of the press club on Monday against the Hesco authorities for disconnecting the power supply to at least 300 residential quarters.

They demanded that their power supply be restored.

They said that Hesco had cut off the power supply saying that it was due to the non-payment of Wapda dues by the Irrigation Department.

They said that they had paid all their bills despite excessive billing by Hesco and Wapda.

They complained that the Hesco officials had been most unjust in disconnecting the electricity to the residential quarters of the Irrigation Department.

BARRAGE COLONY: The Naib Nazim, Sukkur, Iqbal Dawood, expressed displeasure that the electricity of Barrage Colony, where 10,000 irrigation department employees resided, had been cut off during Ramazan.

He said that the electricity had been disconnected despite the employees having paid all their bills.

He said that the people were facing a lot of problems during Iftar and Sehri as they had no water for cooking food, washing dishes, and performing ablution, and added that they had no light to read the Holy Quran.

He wondered why the poor residents of Barrage Colony had to suffer if the Irrigation Department had not paid its electricity bills.

He said the SDO, Wapda, and other staff were not prepared to talk with the aggrieved residents of Barrage Colony.

Mr Iqbal has sent telegrams to President Pervez Musharraf, Governor Sindh Mohammedmian Soomro, and the chief secretary, Sindh, appealing them to help the poor residents of Barrage Colony.

FIR: The SITE police registered an FIR against a constable and six of his accomplices for setting fire to the house of a man, Kabir Shar, and for allegedly trying to kill him in the SITE area on Monday over an enmity. However, nobody had been arrested till the filing of this report.

Constable Ameer Gadani along with six accomplices attacked the house of Kabeer Shar on Monday and opened fire but the latter narrowly escaped and fled.

Later, they set fire to his house.

By the time the Fire Brigade arrived his house had been completely gutted.

TEN INJURED: At least 10 bus drivers including some cleaners were injured in an armed clash between two groups of bus owners in Ghotki on Monday.

Axes and other weapons were freely used in the clash as a result of which ten people were injured.

Later, all the injured were taken to a hospital.

Police arrested 12 people and impounded two buses.

District government: The district government is making sincere efforts to promote education and is also trying to improve its quality.

This was stated by the district Naib Nazim, Iqbal Dawood, while visiting the arts and science exhibition organised by the City School, Sukkur.

He said that the district government was trying to bring the quality of public schools in the district at par with the private schools.

Dawood lauded the efforts made by the school management for imparting quality education to students of the area.

The headmistress of the school’s preparatory branch, Samina Kazmi, briefed the Naib Nazim about the activities of the school.

Earlier, Dawood visited various stalls of the exhibition and commended the students for their outstanding performance.
