Shaheen shines for Shalimar

KARACHI, Nov 17: Skipper Shaheen Malik produced a brilliant all-round performance to guide Shalimar CC to a three-wicket victory over Tapal CC in the 8th Tapal Trophy Ramazan Cricket Festival at UBL Sports Complex here Sunday.

Veteran Shaheen first captured three for 19 with his off-spinners as Tapal CC made 195 for nine in 25 overs and then struck 54 to put his side on victory path.

Tapal CC looked like posting a big total as Hasan Arshad (75) and skipper Hanif-ur-Rehman (63) put on 138 for the opening partnership.

But once they were out, the rot set in. Tapal CC also included a surprise guest player in Pakistan’s indisposed wicket-keeper Rashid Latif, who had arrived in the city from Johannesburg late Saturday night after being forced out of the Zimbabwe tour on medical ground.

The jet-lagged Rashid, however, failed to inspire his side when he was caught off off-spinner Aftab Ahmed after making only seven.

Shalimar CC, in reply, achieved victory in 23.4 overs by making 196 for seven.

Man-of-the-Match Shaheen, who slammed three sixes and four fours in his 54, Shabbir Hussain (43) and Danial Ahsan (36 not out) played fine knocks.

Off-spinners Hanif-ur-Rehman and Haaris Ayaz claimed three wickets apiece for the losers, conceding 22 and 35 runs respectively.

Earlier, Malir Companion defeated UBL Academy by five wickets in the first match of the day.

Ghayasuddin, adjudged Man-of-the-Match, shone for the winners with an excellent all-round showing. He took three for 23 and scored 50 off 31 balls.
