KARACHI: SSGC workers threaten strike

Published November 18, 2002

KARACHI, Nov 17: People’s Unity, CBA of the Sui Southern Gas Company, has warned that the SSGC workers would resort to hunger strike and wear black armbands if the demands put forward to the management were not accepted.

Speaking at a meeting of the workers here on Sunday, the PU’s secretary general, Riaz Awan, regretted that although the charter of demands had become due for acceptance on Jan 1, the management had not yet accepted the same. Its attitude, he said, had resulted in a heightened resentment among the workers who were facing great hardships due to uncontrolled dearness and inflation. Furthermore, he added, the management’s policy of curtailing medical facility and overtime adding to the miseries of the workers.

Mr Memon also urged the management to regularize the services of contractual employees.
