Refugees disappear from Calais

By Our Correspondent

PARIS, Nov 17: Three days after the much-publicized evacuation of 100 homeless foreigners from Saints Peter and Paul Church, Calais Mayor Jacky Henin says he’s extremely surprised to see that the several hundred other Iraqis and Afghans, Romanians and Bulgarians, who had started congregating around the church, sleeping nights in Calais city park, have suddenly disappeared as well.

Their disappearance comes as a surprise as it marks the first time in three years that city streets at night are free of the foreigners, who had come here with the stated objective of making their way to Great Britain.

Although the 100 DPs present in the church were expelled from Calais on Nov 14, an equally large number continued to roam about outside the church, while other homeless foreigners were forced to sleep on benches in Calais city park.

One pro-DP source noted that he’d seen many of them whisked away by bus, to a secret destination, apparently to other refugee centers located outside of Calais.

According to police sources, some were brought to the French border to be expelled towards other unspecified European countries.
