No check on price hike, encroachments

Published November 13, 2002

BAHAWALPUR, Nov 12: The district and tehsil governments have failed to check the menace of price hike and increasing encroachments in markets.

Traders seldom pay any heed to the officially-fixed prices of eatables. Except for flour, all other commodities are being sold at high prices. If the consumers refer to the fixed prices, the retailers refuse to sell the required commodity.

Similarly, city bazaars are squeezing because of encroachments and there is hardly any room even for pedestrians. Shopping now is hell of a job in this city.

The present local government system lacks the force of magistrates who used to conduct in the past surprise raids to check profiteering and encroachments. Due to reasons unknown, the tehsil administration seldom launches such operations.

GANG: Naeem, the former driver of an MPA-elect, has allegedly been the member of a six-member gang of dacoits, thieves and motorcycle-lifters smashed recently by the Sadar police, Bahawalpur.

Police claimed that so far 16 stolen motorcycles and other goods worth Rs2.5 million had been recovered from Naeem and his companions Muhammad Azam, Zafar, Khalid Shah, Mushtaq Ahmed and Muhammad Akram.

Meanwhile, the Cantonment police have also unearthed a motorcycle-lifting gang and arrested its four members. Seven motorcycles and four cars have also been recovered.

MURDER: Another gruesome murder of an aged woman from the suburbs of Ahmedpur East town has been reported. Her body was found in a deserted place near her house in old Ahmedpur East area a few days ago.

This is the second body found within the last three weeks and eighth during the past one year.

The first slain body of anold woman was found in November, 2001, from the area of Saddar police station, Ahmedpur East.

According to the police, no clue to the killer(s) has been found.
