Gas well catches fire after rocket attack

By Our Staff Correspondent

Quetta, Nov 11: A huge fire broke out in a gas well of Pakistan Petroleum Limited in Sui gasfield after a rocket attack, some 450km east of here on Monday.

The incident took place late in the evening when unknown persons fired a rocket from a mountainous hideout, official sources said.

The gas supply was disrupted from the affected well to the main plant in Sui township. No casualty was reported as a result of rocket explosion.

“The gas well No 47 caught fire after the explosion,” a senior PPL official confirmed to this correspondent on telephone from Sui township.

He said the engineers immediately cut off the pipeline to control the blaze.

Sources in the company said the fire was put out after a two hours’ effort. “The well has been closed for the time being,” they added.

The law enforcing agencies and officers of the local administration rushed to the scene of attack and started investigation. A case has been registered against unknown assailants. No arrest has so far been made.

It may be recalled that rocket attacks were a matter of routine in Sui and other gasfields of Balochistan until a few months back. They were brought to an end after the federal government deployed a heavy contingent of Frontier Corps four months ago.
