Loom owners protest against power tariff

MULTAN, Nov 11: Powerloom owners and workers organized a protest rally here on Monday against high power tariff.

The rally was also participated in by the parliamentarians elected from Multan — MNA-elect Liaquat Dogar and MPAs-elect Dr Javed Ahmad Saddiqi and Babu Nafees Ansari.

“It is a silent protest owing to the holy month of Ramazan,” Powerloom Owners Association secretary-general Khalid Qandeel Sindhu told this correspondent at Manzoorabad Chowk where the rally was organized.

Speaking at the rally, the parliamentarians assured the powerloom owners that they would take up the issue of high power tariff on the assembly floor.

Various leaders of component parties of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal also spoke on the occasion, and announced that if elected to power, the MMA would withdraw income and sales tax on electricity bills besides reducing the fuel prices.

Prominent among the participants were former state minister Allama Hamid Saeed Kazmi, ex-MNA Haji Muhammad Boota, ex-MPA Ihsanuddin Qureshi, PPP’s Multan district president Hasibullah Shakir and JI’s Rao Zafar Iqbal.

The local powerloom owners have launched a struggle against increase in electricity rates and the levy of Rs1,000 income tax on power bills.

The association usually organizes a protest rally on every Monday to press the government accept its demand to rationalize the power tariff.

PSP: The Pakistan Seraiki Party organized a protest demonstration here on Monday against the death sentence of Aimal Kasi.

A number of other political and social organizations also participated in the demonstration held in front of the PSP’s office near the Multan bench of the Lahore High Court.

The demonstrators demanded that the death penalty of Kasi be revoked.
