Raja’s three goals prove decisive

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Nov 10: Three goals by Raja Aamir enabled NBC to make a comeback and win the Musa Industries Cup Polo tournament, defeating Mega Infra 5-3 in a keenly contested final  Sunday.

NBC equalised thrice, before scoring two consecutive goals in the third chukker to make the tally. Both teams launched attacks but failed to make a breakthrough in the goalless fourth chukker.

Besides Raja, Sufi Haris and Syed Hassan Raza added a goal each. For losers, Agha Murtaza banged home two goals while Amanat chipped in a goal.

Agha put Mega ahead 1-0 by converting a 30 yard penalty hit in the first chukker. Minutes later, Raja equalised , crowing a field attempt. But Amanat again put Mega in a commanding position by scoring a field goal after picking the ball from the centre line.

Mega led 2-1 at the end of first chukker. The second chukker saw Hassan level the score 2-2 for NBC. Mega again surged ahead making it 3-2 when Agha scored his second goal, converting a 40 yard penalty hit. It was last laugh for Mega as NBC launched a three goal rally in the second and third chukker to turn the tables in their favour.

Raja began the rally scoring a field goal with an angular hit that made it 3-3 at the end of second chukker.

Haris brought NBC forward 4-3 for the first time by scoring a field goal in the start of the third chukker. They gained the upper hand when Raja struck his third goal to make it 5-3.

In the fourth chukker, the contest became very exciting as both sides tried their best to score and on several occasions missed out on goals as the ball deflected off the pole.

Teams:

NBC: Syed Hasan Raza Gillani (-1), raja Aamir Khan (0), Sufi Muhammad Haris (1), Aslam (1).

Mega Infra: Agha Bilal (-1), Tariq (0), Agha Murtaza Ali (1), Amanat (1).

Earlier, five goals by Shah Shamyl Alam followed by a goal from Ayaz Sheikh helped Millennium Bug to take third spot beating Care Knitwear 6-4 1/2.

With half a goal on handicap, Care Knitwear faced pressure from Millennium Bug who had scored six goals till the third chukker in which Shamyl scored five goals. Ayaz struck the sixth goal for the winners. From there onwards Care Knitwear went on a scoring spree to slam in four goals, all through Ahmad Nawaz but it was all in vain as they lost the match.
