Speedy Shining Steel gallops to fourth successive victory

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Nov 6: Shokat Awan’s chestnut colt Shining Steel partnered by M. Nasir, galloped to his fourth successive victory at the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting Wednesday.

Trained by Taj Mohammad, Shining Steel with Golden Voice and Rajwar close on his heels near the bend, pulled away whilst turning for home and sprinted past the winning post in a fast time of one minute 4 2/5 sec.

Stable companion Ever Shine with a late burst finished second, seven lengths behind the winner, with Rajwar and Golden Voice completing the frame.

On the last racing day before the Holy Month of Ramazan, the racing fans suffered badly and were certainly taken for a long ride.

The racing track a complete shambles as compared to those glorious days of the horseracing in the past, has now become a death trap for both horses and their riders.

In the second race won by Reasonable with M. Wasim in the saddle, Lord Of Lords, a thoroughbred bay horse came crashing down to earth near the winning post and lay quite still with the rider sprawled on the turf. Mercifully after awhile the horse stood up after being helped by several hands and was seen limping away towards his stables while M. Yousuf who rode the fallen horse, escaped with minor bruises.

Apart from this mishap in the race, Royal Wisdom ridden by M. Nasir and backed for a song by the punters, played truant and never even figured on the board. The thoroughbred horse Pearl from Taj Mohammad’s yard with Zubair Ahmed glued to the saddle, also did the disappearing act.

In the very next race tragedy struck again, when the bay mare Royal Romance making her bid for victory after settling her account with front runner Great Bakht, stumbled and fell a furlong from the winning post. Great Bakht racing in from behind fell heavily on Royal Romance and in the melee brought down Much Better.

Although Great Bakht was seen limping badly after the race, the other two horses seemed all right, coming off with another great escape. Off the three riders who were brought down, Muzaffar Hussain and Naveed, rode again later in the day, but Raees Ahmed partnering Much Better was rushed off to the hospital.

The first race of the afternoon was won by rank outsider Lucky Love ridden by Tariq Mehmood.

M. Kashif replacing Muzaffar Hussain in the saddle, rode Quick Mover to a fluent victory in the fourth race, overtaking Satellite Star in the last strides, after the latter was engaged in a keen tussle with Shah Rose earlier in the race.

After a big delay where several riders where changed, the Stewards finally decided to cancel the fifth event, when it was found that the chestnut horse Regal was not ticking.

Royal Falcon won the seventh event easily beating Donatello by four lengths, followed home by Deniro and X’Tasy.

The spoils in the concluding race was picked up Nihal Pervaiz’s chestnut mare Lover’s Lady with Shahzad in the saddle, chased all the way past the winning post by Mega Hit, Royal Fantasy and Navaho Princess.
