Nine drown in eastern India


CALCUTTA, Nov 3: At least nine people including seven women drowned on Sunday when an overcrowded boat sank in a river near the eastern Indian city of Calcutta, police said.

Police officials said the boat carrying around 70 passengers sank in Moni river, some 50 kilometres from Calcutta.

Most of the occupants swam to safety, the Press Trust of India added.—AFP
