ISLAMABAD, Oct 31: It was a double delight for Wapda as they claimed both the men’s and women’s team titles in the 46th National Badminton Championship at the Rodham Hall of Pakistan Sports Complex.
In the men’s competition, Wapda defeated fancied New Khan Sports Board (NKSB) 3-2 while their female team-mates edged out Islamabad by a similar scoreline to become the first department ever to win both crowns.
Wajid Ali put Wapda on course with a 15-2, 15-8 win over Waqas in the first singles. However, an injury to NKSB’s ace player Imran Mohib in the second set of men’s doubles made Wapda’s task easier.
Although the injured player tried to continue following medical treatment, he was unable to play to his full potential and along with his partner Noman crashed to the Wapda pair of Wajid and Amir 8-15, 17-15 and conceded the third set.
Imran’s injury helped Wapda further as they were given walkover in the singles match that was to feature Imran. Wapda then conceded the last two singles matches.
In the women’s team final, Wapda opened with victory in the first singles, Mahrah beating Islamabad’s Sahra 11-2, 11-5. She then teamed up with Samia and outplayed the pair of Sahra and Sumera 15-3, 15-1. But Islamabad fought back through Ayesha who outpointed Shazia 11-5, 11-0.
Ayesha, along with Nadia defeated the Wapda team of Shazia and Farzana 8-15, 15-5, 15-7 in the doubles. However Samia sealed victory for Wapda with a 11-4, 11-9 win over Nadia.
