Smooth sailing for Aqeel and Asim

LAHORE, Oct 30: Top seed Aqeel Khan and second ranked Asim Shafik  notched up easy victories to enter into quarterfinals  of the  Global Telecom Cup National Grass Court Tennis  Championship at the Punjab Coaching Centre Courts Wednesday.

Aqeel blasted Shahbaz Ahmad in  straight set 6-3, 6-3. Fresh from a victory in the final of the UBL  Salma Noorani tournament, Aqeel showed his class and outclassed his rival taking just 35 minutes for victory.

Second  seed,  Shafik  ousted little known Israr  Gul  with  a convincing straight set 6-1, 6-2 triumph. Shafik who missed the Karachi’s competition due to ailing father displayed form and fitness  and is likely to face Aqeel in the final.

Nomi  Qamar, the third seed, clobbered Shahid Afridi 6-3,  6-3 to  move into the next stage of the competition. Qamar  who  gave tough  fight  to  Aqeel in the final last week is  also  a  strong contender for the final.

In  an upset, Wasif Cheema outplayed the 10th seed  Aurangzeb Khan 6-2, 6-4. Aurangzeb a seasoned campaigner looked out of touch as he failed to counter the sizzling forehand smashes from Cheema.

In  the  well-contested  match of the  day,  between  unseeded players, Asif Feroze went to full distance to beat Jehanzeb Khan 2-6,  6-0,  6-3.

 Feroze after losing the  first set rediscovered his form and ran out winner winning the next two sets scoring points with excellent court crafts and fine drop shots..

Rashid  Malik  also  moved  into  the  next  round. Veteran Rashid faced no much difficulty in overcoming Barkatullah 6-2, 6-1.

Highly talented Shahzad Khan made short work of to overwhelm Saeed Shahab 6-2, 6-2 in a one-sided affair.
