GUJRANWALA, Oct 29: Doctors continued their strike throughout the Punjab on Tuesday to protest against the arrest of orthopaedist Dr Amir Aziz.
The Gujranwala chapter of the Pakistan Medical Association, at a meeting presided over by its president, Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad Tarar, decided on Tuesday that doctors would observe one-hour token strike from 10am on Wednesday and Thursday in all public hospitals of the district.
Patients in emergency wards would be attended only from Friday if Dr Amir Aziz was not released.
The doctors of all public hospitals in the district wore black armbands on Tuesday to protest against the arrest of Dr Amir Aziz.
The meeting said that treatment of any ill person was not a crime.
Meanwhile, the District Bar Association also condemned the arrest of Dr Amir Aziz.
Through an unanimous resolution, the Bar demanded immediate release of Dr Aziz.
The meeting, presided over by DBA president Mian Maqsood Ahmad, alleged that the government was playing in the hands of the US and European Union.
FAISALABAD: A large number of doctors of the Allied and DHQ hospitals and students of the Punjab Medical College held a rally on Tuesday to protest against the arrest of Dr Amir Aziz and constitution of boards of governors for health and educational institutions.
The participants in the rally were wearing black armbands and chanting slogans against the government for ‘selling’ the hospital and educational institutions to industrialists.
They threatened to observe complete strike in all hospitals and medical institutions in case Dr Amir Aziz was not released within 24 hours.
The offices-bearers of the Faisalabad chapter of the Pakistan Medical Association also spoke to the participants in the rally. They included Prof Shuja Tahir, Prof Mahnaz Rohi, Prof Dr Tufail Muhammad, Dr Khalid Latif, Dr Nisar Ahmed Khan and Dr Abdul Sattar Qureshi.
They criticized the Model University Ordinance and the constitution of boards of governors for the colleges and hospitals.
They said that the present regime had been threatening that the teachers and doctors, who were protesting against the BoGs, would be sacked.
Around a dozen doctors and teachers had been removed from service while more would be sacked within next days. But doctors, students and teachers would continue their protest till the acceptance of their demands, they added.
They also held Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool responsible for the ‘mess’ and urged President Gen Pervez Musharraf to intervene and order withdrawal of the decision of the Punjab government to set up BoGs.
Terming the arrest of Dr Amir Aziz a violation of human rights, they demanded his immediate release.
JHANG: The members of the Pakistan Medical Association continued their protest for the release of Dr Amir Aziz for the third day on Tuesday.
Doctors in various hospitals of the district observed two-hour token strike and wore black armbands.
