FAISALABAD, Oct 29: The Punjab government has decided in principle to establish recreational places and wild-life parks in major cities in collaboration with industrialists and hand over the control of parks and greet-belts to the private sector through Boards of Management.
Sources in the Forest and Wild-Life Department here on Tuesday told this correspondent that a comprehensive plan was being finalized at the provincial level to set up recreational and wild-life parks in open places in congested cities. These parks would be run by Boards of Management comprising representatives of both public and private sectors.
The sources further told that all gardens and play-grounds under TMA control would be handed over to Boards of Management under the proposed plan.
The Canal Park on Samundri Road, Kaleem Shaheed Park in Ghulam Mohammadabad, Madni Park in Samanabad, Fatima Jinnah Garden and Bagh-i-Jinnah would be handed over to Boards of Management for their modernization. The green belts of the city would be named after various companies that would be made responsible for their management.
The plan was being taken over by the Punjab government after reports about failure of local governments in this regard.
The first wild-life park of its kind in Faisalabad is being established on 131 acres at Garwala about 14km from here, where construction work is in full swing. This project will be completed at a cost of Rs104 million with the help of local industries. A 14-member Board of Management has also been constituted for this park. Seven of its members are from the private sector.
The defunct Tehsil Municipal Administration has collected donations from local industrialists and multinational companies for upgradation and modernization of parks and green belts of the city.
Work on a TMA beautification plan for the city is also under way in some places.
