PESHAWAR, Oct 28: A teenaged girl, who left her home a day before her marriage, was handed over to her parents by a local court here on Monday after the parents gave an undertaking that they would not kill her.

A notable of Bhadabher area where the family has been living, appeared with father of the girl, Miss R, and gave an undertaking that he would be responsible for the safety of the girl and she would not become a prey of the custom of honour killing.

The girl, with her alleged lover, was sent to prison on Friday last as the police apprehended that she would be killed by her family members.

The marriage of the girl was scheduled for Saturday and her Nikkah was solemnized on Thursday last. In the late hours of the night, she left her home along with her lover, Roohullah Khan, residing in a nearby area.

An official of Bhadabher police station said at about 11.30pm a police mobile spotted the boy and girl on roadside. The boy signalled the police pick-up to stop, presuming it to be a passenger vehicle. The police took them to the police station.

The police charged them under section 294. On Friday they were produced before the court of judicial magistrate, Adil Akbar, who fined them Rs 400 each and issued their release order.

The police claimed that no sooner had they come out of the courtroom, mother of the girl started beating and cursing her. It was then that the police came to know about the incident. The policemen took them back to the judicial magistrate and informed him about threat to their lives. The magistrate sent them to prison.

Consequently, the father of the girl appeared before the court, stating that he would submit surety bonds for her release. Finally, the court directed him to produce a person of mean who could guarantee the safety of the girl.

The local police was apprehensive about her fate, stating that the area where she reside honour-related murders were a routine matter.
