LAHORE: Oct 27: Odds-on favourite bay colt Canwara showed an impressive turn of speed to land the term race for two-year- old halfbreds run over 1000 metres at the Racecourse Sunday.

Backed at half-money favourite and trained by Haji Fazal Hadi, Canwara made all the running to defeat the on-rushing Super Star by two lengths. Triple ‘M’ stayed on well in the finishing stages to finish third, one-and-a-quarter length behind while Royal Gunner completed the frame, another two lengths back.

In all, seven ran for this fourth and feature event after the last minute withdrawal of Glorious Song.

Jockey Shahid Rehman road Canwara and clocked one minute four seconds over the distance.

Three-year-old chestnut colt Red Ransom put up a smashing performance under jockey Aamar Parvez to win the sixth and supporting event run over 1400 metres.

Son of Dexter out-of-Raba Riba took up the running after over 200 metres out and, from that moment on the race was his.

Conqueror challenging under pressure finished second, two lengths behind. Millennium Count and Lucky Shot completed the board. Eight ran for the event after the last-minute withdrawal of Lake District.

A race earlier, the bay filly Red Storm managed to beat fancied Silver Jet by three-fourth of a length in a storming way under jockey Shahid Rehman.

Silver Jet ridden by jockey M. Hanif confidently backed by connections from three to two down to 30 to 100 failed to justify his hot favouritism. Calmness prevailed over the race club when he was beaten unexpectedly.

Storm Bird and Good Justice finished third and fourth, respectively.

Jockey Shahid Rehman won both the feature and supporting event to distinguish himself among the riders. He rode Canwara and Red Storm. Trainer Fazal Hadi saddled two winners, Shanell and Canwara. Only two favourites won in a card of six events. In the First race fancied mare Turn On stumbled in the home stretch and went lame to finish among also ran. The horse-owners blame the race club for not maintaining the race-track properly.

The un-even surface of the track caused incidents of stumbling in which runners go lame oftenly, they said.
