Closure of B. Ed College criticized

Published October 27, 2002

LARKANA, Oct 26: The district government has taken an exception to closure of the Education College’s Larkana branch and demanded of the government to reverse the decision, knowledgeable sources said.

This college, they said, was established in Aug 1993 as a branch of the Sukkur College of Education and its performance was so outstanding that the management of the Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, had permitted it to initiate masters classes in Oct 1999.

The Sindh government had subsequently upgraded its status in May 2000, the sources said.

The district Nazim, Khursheed Junijo, in a communication sent on Oct 23 to the Sindh Governor, has highlighted the encouraging performance of the B.Ed. College, Larkana.

The nazim expressed his surprise over the fact that the executive district officer, Education (colleges), Sukkur, had issued the orders of the closure of the B.Ed. College, Larkana, without even having bothered to seek approval of the provincial government or any other competent authority.

The EDO had, however, advised the principal of the college to approach the education department after issuing the order, the sources said.

The EDO (Education), Larkana, in his comments passed on to the Sindh education department on Apr 20, had supported upgrading of the college’s status.

Meanwhile, the Zila Nazim said that the EDO education, Sukkur, had issued closure order on May 27 despite the fact that the matter was under discussion with the education department at the provincial level.

The Zila Nazim further said that he failed to understand why an educational institution, which was performing satisfactorily, had been closed down without assigning any cogent reason.

He urged the Sindh governor to rescue this college besides helping in withdrawing the closure orders of the college.
