KARACHI: Workshop discusses time management

KARACHI, Oct 26: A workshop for journalists on the subject ‘Effective time management’ was held at the Vicky Zeitlin Media Library of Pakistan Press Foundation here on Saturday.

The workshop facilitator, Mirza Dilawar Baig, Manager Management Training of PIA, said that time management is the systematic approach by an individual in setting his priorities with an objective to accomplish the desired goals.

A person has to chalk out his priorities, goals, strategies, schedule for securing comforts of life and all these require an effective time management.

Terming time management an ‘art’, he said one has to pursue the art of investing time in the efforts towards attainment of goals. By using his time properly, he learns about perception of life, surrounding environment, response to stressful situations and social attitudes besides objectives and goals, he added.

Analyzing the average 60-year life of a person, he observed that it takes about 24 years for him to grow and educate himself. Another 26 and-a-half years, he said, are spent on morning preparations, commuting (for work and other activities), job handling, eating, pastime activities and sleeping.

“Time of choice left with the person is only 9.5 years which is not insufficient,” he opined.

Mentioning significance of time management, he observed that it leads to self-assurance and self-satisfaction, purposeful living, efficiency, effectiveness and development in working activities of life, self-development and career planning besides an effective goal-setting.

He pin-pointed 10 common time-wasting factors as distractions and interruptions, excessive paperwork, poor delegation, personal disorganization, conversation with drop-in visitors, indecision, failure to set priorities, procrastination, non-essential phone calls and ineffective meetings.—PPI
