Taimur sets early pace

RAWALPINDI, Oct 25: Taimur Hassan of Islamabad Club was ahead in the amateur gross competition on the opening day of the President of Pakistan Cup Tournament at the Rawalpindi Golf Club Friday.

With a score of 73, Taimur left behind Karar Hussain who finished the day at 75 with another Islamabad golfer Gulrez Shahid following in third place at 76.

Fawad Baig of Lahore Garrison Golf & Country Club, a 14 handicapper and Islamabad’s Fayyaz Raja with a handicap of 10 were both tied for lead with scores of 68 net in the amateurs net category. Rawalpindi Golf Club’s Umar Aslam was a stroke behind at 69 while Manzar Khursheed and Kashif M Khan were locked in third place at 70.

Wamiq Shakeel of the host club was the leader in the juniors gross tournament achieving a score of 83. He was followed by Haider Attiq and Umer Khokhar, both of whom were joint second.

Zohair Alam, having a handicap of 36 stood in first place in the junior net event with a score of 58 while there was a two-way tie between Haider Attiq and Wamiq Shakeel who had scores of 63.

M. Akhtar Khan won the nine-hole veterans match featuring golfers aged 65 and above, with a gross score of 48. He was followed by Maj. Gen (Retd) FA Barki at 56 and Lt. Col (Retd) Khan Afzal Afridi taking third place with gross 58.

M. Fayyaz was the winner of the net competition with a score of 34 net. Muhammad Iqbal (42) was second and Maj. Gen (Retd) HUK Niazi third at 48.

The ladies tournament over 36 holes is due to start Saturday. Also in action will be senior golfers between the ages of 55 and 65 who will compete over 15 holes.
