KARACHI: Probe into journalist’s murder demanded

KARACHI, Oct 24: President Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors Mujibur Rahman Shami and secretary-general CPNE Mahmudul Aziz have condemned the murder of Shahid Soomro, a correspondent of daily Kawish at Kandhkot on Monday.

They urged the governor to order a judicial inquiry into the murder and award exemplary punishment to those found guilty.

They said that the CPNE always stood by principle of supporting journalists in their right to report objectively on events and any attempts by any person, group or vested interests to seek to suppress objective reporting of events must be resisted by all sections of the press, they added.

Mujibur Rahman Shami and Mahmudul Aziz urged the governor to direct full protection to the members of bereaved family and provide immediate substantial monetary compensation to the bereaved family.

The CPNE office-bearers also offered heartfelt sympathies and condolences to bereaved family.

KUJ: Karachi Union of Journalists has also condemned the murder of Shahid Soomro.

In a statement on Thursday, KUJ president Qamar Ullah Chaudri and general secretary Rana M. Khalid said it was an attack on freedom of press and manifestation of intolerant attitude of society.

They said that in the past also a couple of other newsmen were either maltreated, or kidnapped or murdered for not toeing the political lines of the influential leaders of their respective area.—APP/PPI
