Riding boy Aziz scores splendid hat trick

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Oct 23: Riding boy A. Aziz gave a dazzling display of horsemanship when he scored a hat trick during the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Wednesday.

A promising rider, Aziz set off on the path to glory, with a half length success on odds-on favourite bay filly Royal Harban in the opener.

He then followed it up with another back to back victory on five to two second favourite bay gelding Goshie The Great in the second race, completing his hat trick with a fluent victory on three to one chance chestnut gelding Copper Fields, who beat fancied bay colt Eastern Bird by two lengths.

Fancied bay colt Cape Town lived up his status of even-money favouritism with a commanding five length victory over the colt Chief Executive in the sixth and feature event of the day.

The joint-favourite bay horse Silver charm finished third another two lengths back while the bay mare Fiji completed the frame among nine runners.

A race earlier 70 to 100 favourite Popeye Well stormed home in the last few strides to knock out the front-running chestnut colt Knock Out on the finishing post. The magic eye of the camera gave a short-head verdict in favour of Popeye Well.

Lucky Bailiff and Weldon Shogun finished third and fourth, respectively.

In the fourth race a mishap paved the way for the victory of bay filly My Fantasy. As the runners turned their heads towards the straight, fancied gelding Irslan was comfortably heading the field and looked a probable winner.

All of a sudden he broke one of his fore legs and had a fall. His rider A.Imran too fell down but luckily escaped unhurt. Irslan was later relieved of his misery.

In the meantime My Fantasy, who was chasing Irslan, crossed the winning post first defeating joint favourite bay colt Bach View by four lengths, who too was badly interfered during the race. My Fantasy was a rank outsider.

Two favourites and two second favourites obliged in a card of six events decided in the afternoon. All events were contested over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres:
