Difficult task to pick winner

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Oct 22: A competitive card of six events awaits race-goers at the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races to be held at the Racecourse Wednesday.

All events will be contested over the sprinting distance of 1200 metres. In all, 68 runners have been left in after the final forfeit Tuesday to compete in six events, barring last-minute withdrawals.

The races have been composed of nine to thirteen acceptors while one has the biggest field of 18. In each event there are at least four or even more chance runners which will make winner picking a difficult task for punters.

The sixth and feature event, the Kharian Plate, class VII division V has nine runners, if there are no last-minute withdrawals. Cape Town, Russian Pet, Fiji and Silver Charms are the chance contestant in this race. They should fight for the top honours. The distance goes in favour of Cape Town.

Three-year-old bay colt Eastern Bird, who was beaten a week ago by Turn On, should make amends this time in the third race. This halfbred colt from Shahpur out-of-Guinea, Eastern Bird looks the best proposition of the day.

Four-year-old dark-bay colt Jehandar is a cut above in class vis-a-vis his ten rivals in the fourth race provided he takes a level start.

This colt has a tendency to come out of the starting gate a bit slower and he fails to make up the lost ground in sprinting distance races. The distance of 1200 metres goes in his favour. The first race will be held at 1.00 pm.
