Rallies demand trial in Anti-Terrorism Court: Murder of journalist

SUKKUR, Oct 22: The killing of a journalist, Shahid Soomro, has spread a wave of resentment among the journalists of Sindh as they held demonstrations and meetings in different parts of the province on Tuesday.
Protest rallies were taken out by journalists in Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Ghotki, Khairpur and other parts of Sindh to condemn the murder of their colleague, Shahid Soomro.
Shahid Soomro, the reporter of Daily Kawish in Kandhkot, was gunned down on Monday night in connection with his professional writing in the recent election campaign.
Partial shut-down was observed in Kandhkot to mourn the death of Shahid Soomro.
A procession was also taken out in Kandhkot to protest against the killing of the journalist. It was participated by a large number people.
The protesters also staged a sit-in near the Clock Tower as well as the A Section police station.
The biggest protest rally was organised by the Sukkur Press club, which was participated by hundreds of journalists from all over Sindh.
The protesters demanded award of exemplary punishment to the culprits besides calling for their immediate arrest.
They also called for them to be tried in the anti-terrorism court.
The protesters marched through the main thoroughfares of the city and later staged a sit-in near the AIG’s office.
The DIG, Sukkur Range, Syed Mushtaq Shah, assured a delegation of journalists that the culprits would be arrested soon and that they would be produced in the anti-terrorism court.
The DSP Incharge of the investigation extended a firm assurance regarding arrest of all the culprits involved in the murder within 24 hours.
Protest rallies were also taken out in Khairpur, Ranipur, Bachal Bhambhro, Ripri, Kotdiji and elsewhere in the province to condemn the brutal murder.
SANGHAR: The journalists held a meeting here to condemn the killing of Soomro in Kandhkot and demanded exemplary punishment to the killers.
The journalists wore black arm-bands and hoisted a black flag on the press club.
KHAIRPUR: Journalists of Khairpur took out a protest rally from the press club to Panj Gulla here on Tuesday to protest the assassination of Soomro.
The journalists staged sit-in at Panj Gulla. They wore black arm-bands and demanded immediate arrest of the killers.
SHIKARPUR: The journalists of Shikarpur district, through a resolution adopted at a meeting here on Tuesday, called for the immediate arrest of the killers of the deceased journalist.
The meeting, held at the press club, demanded the registration of a murder case under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
NAWABSHAH: A condolence meeting held here at the Nawabshah Press Club on Tuesday condemned the murder of Soomro. The journalists wore black arm-bands and hoisted black flag on the press club.
