Terbrugge takes five as Proteas triumph
EAST LONDON (South Africa), Oct 21: David Terbrugge improved his career best figures as South Africa surged to an innings victory over Bangladesh on the fourth day of the first Test at Buffalo Park here Monday.
South Africa won by an innings and 107 runs with fast bowler Terbrugge taking five for 46 in Bangladesh’s second innings of 252.
South Africa declared their first innings on 524 for four, to which Bangladesh replied with 170.
Bangladesh resumed on 209 for five, and were dismissed in the 10th over of the fourth day’s play.
The slide began with the fifth ball of the day when Terbrugge trapped Alok Kapali lbw for 10, ending an innings of 90 minutes.
Terbrugge struck the day’s most telling blow in his next over, the first with the new ball, when he dismissed Khaled Mashud lbw. The Bangladesh captain held the middle order together with his 33, which was more than three hours in the making.
Four overs later Terbrugge found the top of Mohammad Rafique’s middle stump to bowl him for 19.
Tapash Baisya departed for 10 in Terbrugge’s next over, his drive caught in the covers by Gary Kirsten.
Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini claimed the last wicket when Manjural Islam skied a drive to substitute fielder Alfonso Thomas in the covers.
Terbrugge’s previous best figures were the three for 27 he took against the West Indies in Port Elizabeth in 1998-99.
