KARACHI, Oct 21: Second seed Nomi Qamar moved into the second round in the Men’s singles Sixth UBL Salma Noorani Ranking Tennis Championship, but not before having anxious moments at the hardcourts of the Karachi Club.

Nomi finding the court a little too fast for his liking after playing a recent tournament on clay, had to work hard in overcoming Ahmed Hussain 6-3, 6-4.

Unlike the second seed, fourth seed Shahid Khan had a smooth entry into the next round with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Gul Hameed.

The Junior third seed Shahid Afridi competing in the Men’s event beat Amir Ali Khan in two straight sets and playing his match in the Juniors under-18 event, Shahid downed Usman Ijaz 6-2, 6-1.

Munir Ashiq swept past Saim Nisar 6-0, 6-0. Earlier on Sunday night Munir breezed past Akber Hayat also by a 6-0, 6-0 margin.

In other matches played, fifth seed Mutib Pasha beat M.Z. Khattak in two straight sets and the same can be said about Aurangzeb who got the better of Amjad Nasir 6-3, 6-3. Wang Xion Peng from China who played so well in the qualifiers, bowed out of the tournament however, after going down 4-6, 2-6 to Usman Ejaz.

In the Juniors event, fourth seed Tanveer Ashiq had little difficulty is disposing off Faizan Mustafa 6-0, 6-1, and seventh seed Haris Iltifat beat Ravi Das without dropping a point. Ravi’s brother Anil also had to make his exit after going down 1-6, 3-6 to Mutib Pasha.

Also going through the next round without dropping a set were Adnan Khan, who accounted for Haseeb Jawed, Salman Ali, who beat Fahad Bin Ejaz, Yasir Khan, who ended the pretensions of Ahmed Hameed and Ahmed Aslam who also won his match in two straight sets against Fahad Anwar under floodlights.
