EAST LONDON (South Africa), Oct 20: Al Shahriar made a career-best 71 to bolster the Bangladesh second innings Sunday but South Africa were still in overall command at the close of the third day of the first Test.
With Bangladesh needing to score 359 to avoid a crushing innings defeat, opener Al Shahriar helped them reach a more respectable 209 for five at the end of the day.
Captain Khaled Mashud was unbeaten on 32 and Alok Kapali not out nine.
South Africa had declared their first innings closed on 529 for four Saturday before paceman Makhaya Ntini claimed figures of five for 19 as Bangladesh collapsed to 170 all out.
Bangladesh then lost the first wicket of their second innings before lunch when Javed Omar, on 10, sent a ball from fast bowler Mornantau Hayward looping to Herschelle Gibbs in the gully.
Al Shahriar and Habibul Bashar added 66 runs for the second wicket before Habibul hooked a ball from Hayward to fellow paceman David Terbrugge at fine leg, departing for 21.
Al Shahriar’s two-hour vigil and fourth Test half-century finally came to an end when Ntini bowled the batsman off his pads, but the Bangladeshi batsman had surpased his previous Test best of 68.
Ntini, South Africa’s key wicket-taker in the first innings, might have had another wicket if Graeme Smith at first slip held on to a chance offered by Sanwar Hossain on 18.
But Sanwar was less fortunate when umpire Russell Tiffin later adjudged him out leg before to fast bowler Terbrugge for 49 off a no-ball — the bowler having clearly overstepped the mark.
The visitors slipped to 176 for five when Tushar Imran, on eight, prodded a delivery from left-arm spinner Claude Henderson to Martin van Jaarsveld at silly mid-off but Khaled Mashud and Kapali held firm until the close with an unbroken stand of 33.
Bangladesh had resumed their first innings on 153 for seven, but Tapash Baisya was caught behind in the third over of the day by South Africa’s stand-in skipper Mark Boucher for two.
Manjural Islam was bowled by Ntini, in his next over, for four and Talha Jubair was also caught behind, off Terbrugge, for three.
Ntini might have taken six wickets and improved on his career best of six for 66, but Smith at first slip botched what should have a simple catch offered by Jubair on two.
