DADU, Oct 20: About 100 local Zakat committees have been dissolved in Sindh on charges of corruption, the provincial secretary Auqaf, Zakat, and Ushr, Faseehuddin Khan said.

Speaking at a press conference at the Auqaf Rest House in Sehwan on Sunday, he said that cases had been registered against officials, including the chairmen of these committees.

The secretary Auqaf said that 7,800 zakat committees were operating at the local, taluka and district level to monitor the distribution of Zakat in Sindh.

He said that the Central Zakat Council had released Rs190 million for free distribution of wheat among the poor in the drought-affected areas of the province.

Faseehuddin Khan said that wheat distribution had begun from Tharparkar district, adding that quality wheat worth Rs100 million had been purchased from the food department for distribution in that district.

He said that wheat worth Rs90 million would be distributed in other parts of the province through the district Nazims.

He also said that the accounts of the Zakat committees in Sindh would be audited for the first time, adding that corrupt officials would be punished.

He said that an amount of Rs40 million was being spent on development works for minorities in the province.
