French fear terrorist strike
By Our Correspondent
PARIS, Oct 19: French police say they are taking seriously the possibility of a terrorist attack on Paris, and have decided to place many suspected French Al-Qaeda members under surveillance.
In the wake of last week’s attack against a Bali discotheque, and the death of at least four French nationals, France’s anti-terrorist police have decided to concentrate their attention on fifty suspects.
“These are ultra-dangerous individuals,” one police official was quoted as saying.
Police are concerned that some of the terrorists may go through with their plans to stage a spectacular attack on the French capital, perhaps even launch an aircraft against the Eiffel Tower.
Only last week, the police arrested three immigrants of North African origin in the Paris suburb of Aubervilliers, saying that they were engaging in the sale of contraband as a means of financing the activities in France of a “radical Islamic” movement.
