Kazim to lead PPP(S) in NWFP PA

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Oct 19: The PPP (Sherpao) has appointed Syed Murid Kazim parliamentary leader in the NWFP Assembly.

A decision in this respect was taken at a parliamentary party meeting of the PPP (S) held at People’s House here on Saturday. The meeting was presided over by Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao.

It was also decided that party president Aftab Sherpao would vacate his provincial assembly seat and lead the party in the National Assembly.

The meeting also constituted a three-member committee comprising Ahmad Hassan Khan, Ghanidad Khan and Iqbal Hussain Khattak, which would hold negotiations with Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and other political parties in the province on the future setup.

Speaking on the occasion, Aftab Sherpao said that his party would work for the stability of the country and promotion of democratic institutions. He vowed to continue struggle for the rights of the oppressed masses and help reduce their grievances.

He told the meeting that the PPP (S) would play its positive role both in national and provincial assemblies.

He maintained that they extended support to the MMA in the NWFP Assembly in order to safeguard the rights of the people. He contended that the support to MMA would serve larger national interests and strengthen democracy in the country.

Despite PPP (S) alliance with PML(Q), Aftab Sherpao proposed that the MMA should also become a partner at federal level so as to bring it in the mainstream politics.

He said that it would be in a greater national interest if the MMA became a part of the central government, adding that it would help remove the apprehensions about it.

He believed that PPP(S) was in favour of national consensus which could be achieved by ending a row between the Centre and the provinces.

He deplored that in the past confrontation between federation and federating units had caused immense damage to the country and now the politicians should realise the gravity of the situation to work for national cohesion.

He regretted that people were facing great problems and such an environment should be created to redress the grievances of the people.

He expressed the hope that the new government would chalk out a comprehensive strategy to attract foreign investment that would help improve the economic condition.

The newly-elected MNA, Sher Akbar Khan, and MPAs including Makhdoom Murid Kazim, Shad Mohammad Khattak, Sikandar Sherpao, Liaquat Khattak, Haji Jamshed, Arshad Khan, Alamzeb Umerzai, Sardar Ayub Khan and Ms Ghazala Habib also spoke on the occasion.
