Railways claim weightlifting crown

ISLAMABAD, Oct 18: Railways toppled defending champions Army Friday to claim the 11th Junior National Weightlifting Championship at Pakistan Sports Complex.

Haroon Asif captured a gold in the 105 kg category and Wasif Hanif Butt did the same in the plus 105 kg competition to take Railways final tally of golds to four. Their lifters also picked up four silvers in the two-day championship to see their side finish on top with 68 points.

Wapda, with 45 points took the runner-up spot while Army had to be content with third place, managing just 35 points.

Results: (snatch, clean & jerk, total):

85 kg category: Shakir Butt (Army, 130, 150, 280); Zeeshan Butt (Punjab, 110, 130, 240); Shahbaz Ghani (Punjab, 105, 125, 230).

94 kg category: Ali Aslam (Wapda, 137.5, 170, 307.5); Shahbaz Amin Malik (Railways 117.5, 165, 282.5); Rashid Aqeel Aslam (130, 150, 280).

105 kg category: Haroon Asif (Railways 135, 160, 295); Shakil Ahmed 110, 150, 260); Karamat Ali (Police, 90, 120, 210).

Plus 105 kg category: Wasif Hanif Butt (Railways, 130, 170, 300); Waqas Butt (Railways, 130, 157.5, 287.5); Nadeem Rafiq (Wapda, 110, 140, 250).

Points table: Railways 68, Wapda 45, Army 35, Punjab 34, Police 11, NWFP 7, Sindh 5, Islamabad 3. (Balochistan and UGC did not take part in the championship).

Medals table (gold, silver, bronze):

Railways 4-4-0; Wapda 2-2-2; Army 2-0-1; Punjab 0-2-3; NWFP 0-0-1; Police 0-0-1.
