Grammar School coast to victory

KARACHI, Oct 17: A hurricane knock of 84 runs by Omayr Shaikh, coupled with some fine off-spin bowling by 14-year-old Asad Matcheswala, (four for five runs), enabled Karachi Grammar School coast to a 103-run victory over Bay View High School in the Rev. Father Robert D’Silva Golden Jubilee Invitation Inter-School cricket tournament played Thursday at the National Bank of Pakistan ground.

With Omayr in splendid form with the willow, Karachi Grammar School reached 207 for seven in their allotted 25 overs with Ali Irfan Shaikh contributing a polished knock of 55 runs as the two put on 131 runs for the second wicket. Skipper Ali Abbas Khatawala chipped in with 19 runs. Omer Arshad three for 35 and Daniel Lockner two for 25, were among the wickets for Bay View High.

Needing 208 runs for victory, Bay View High never on the victory track, were bowled out for only 104 runs in 24.3 overs. Hammad Karim top scored for his side with 22 runs and opener Ghulam Rasool managed 19 runs. Apart from Asad’s match winning spell, medium pacer Nadir Daudi claimed three for 21.

Skipper Ali Abbas Khatawala excelled behind the stumps, claiming five victims (one caught and four stumped).

In two other matches played at the P.A.D. ground, St. Patrick’s High School beat Beacon House by 50 runs and Oasys beat St. Peter’s High School by four wickets.

Winning their third match on the trot, St. Patrick’s were the first team to reach the semi-final stage.

Batting first, St. Patrick’s were bowled out for 166 runs in their 25 overs with sound knocks coming from the blades of opener Asad Ali Khan (65), Jerry Decruze (21) and Talha Shaikh (21 n.o.).

Talal Shah was the pick of the Beacon House attack, picking up three for 22. He was ably supported by Faisal Ahmed two for 24 and Waqas Baghpati two for 29.

Beacon House in reply were skittled out for only 116 runs with Talal Shah top scoring with 29 runs. Usman Usmani was once again the leading wicket-taker for St. Patrick’s claiming four for 14. Mohammad Murtaza also bowling well had figures of two for 13.

In the afternoon’s session St. Peter’s High School crashed to their second defeat after being bundled out for 126 runs. Shahbaz Ahmed scored (27), Salman Azeem (22) and Ammar Yousuf (18). Hasan Kazim bagged two wickets for 30 runs.

Oasys reached the winning target scoring 129 runs for the loss of six wickets. Umer Hussain held the innings together with an unbeaten knock of 44 runs. Ali Raza also among the runs scored (20).

Ammram Yousuf two for 17 and Shahbaz Ahmed two for 21, bowled a fine line and length for the losing side.

On Monday Oct 21, Beacon House meet St. Paul’s High School at 9-30 a.m. and The Lyceum School take on St. Peter’s High School at 1-30 p.m. Both matches will be played at the National Bank of Pakistan ground, Clifton.
