Favourites flop at Lahore races

LAHORE, Oct 16: Followers of favourites suffered heavily when fancied contestants flopped in five out of six events decided in the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse Wednesday.

The only firm favourite to win in the afternoon was bay mare Turn On in the third race. Owned by Sohrab Khan, Turn On beat Eastern Bird by two lengths in a handy position. Gently and Stars ‘N’ Stripes completed the board among ten runners.

The favourites rout began from the opener when the long shot bay filly Final Count Down nosed out bay gelding Sun Dance upsetting all calculations to register her maiden victory.

Fancied King Panther, who was slow at the start, failed to make up the lost ground and finished third, two-and-a-half lengths further behind while Tulip completed the frame among only six runners.

The second event was won by three to one chance bay filly The Warrior.

Fancied bay mare In The Game disappointed her connections finishing third, another one-and-a-half lengths back with joint favourite Rocket fourth, a length further back.

The rank outsider bay horse Royal Man dumbfounded every one by his surprise victory in the fourth race. He beat Super Time by about two lengths. Fancied My Fantasy failed to live up to the expectations of her backers and was nosed out to third place after pushing Irslan to fourth position.

The five to two second favourite bay colt Great King proved too good for his eight rivals recording a facile win in the fifth and supporting event. He defeated the neglected Lucky Bailiff by eight lengths. Jonty Road and fancied Knock Out completed the frame.

The joint favourite Weldon Shogum finished among also ran. The winner gave jockey Salah-ud-Din II an arm-chair ride.

In the concluding and feature event rank outsider Science Fiction stormed home to win by defeating fancied Fiji by about three lengths.
