FAISALABAD, Oct 15: In an anti-encroachment operation in some commercial areas here on Tuesday, the Tehsil Municipal Administration impounded dozens of electricity appliances and other articles displayed on footpaths.
TMA’s “anti-encroachments squads” raided eight bazaars at Circular Road, Kotwali, Narwala Road and the adjoining commercial area and took into custody dozens of refrigerators, television sets, washing machines, pedestal and ceiling fans and other electricity appliances encroaching on footpaths. The teams also removed hundreds of hand-carts, makeshift shops and vendors from roadside and seized their goods.
This was the first TMA operation of its kind since the commencement of election activities in the city, as the entire staff had been busy campaigning for the bother of city Nazim Mumtaz Ali Cheema, Mushtaq Ali Cheema.
A group of shopkeepers told this correspondent that the TMA raids were only meant to enhance the rate of “monthly bribes”. The TMA has issued no written statement about the impounded articles. A good number of vendors and shopkeepers would be deprived of their articles, they claimed.
They urged the governor to take notice of the “highhandedness” of TMA functionaries.
NCJP: The National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) has urged upon all Christians to work for peace and build a society in which all could live like brothers. It also asked Christians to pray that the US may not attack Iraq.
A resolution was passed to this effect at an NCJP meeting under the chairmanship of Bishop Joseph Coutts here on Tuesday.
Bishop Joseph pointed out that in the US, the Catholic Bishops had appealed to President Bush “to step back from the brink of war”. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference in an official letter had urged upon the US president to seek diplomatic means for a way out of the crises instead of war.
